Enrichment and Electives

Students at New LA have daily Physical Education (P.E.) daily and art class once a week. In addition to these classes, students may choose from different electives each trimester. Samples electives are an additional P.E. or art class, digital citizenship, coding, or crafts.

P.E.

Physical fitness and awareness of the human body is important to the health and well being of all students. This is achieved by providing a comprehensive Physical Education Curriculum, focused on developing an understanding of the connection between mental and physical conditioning.

Art

New LA Middle School believes strongly that the Arts are an integral part of an educational experience. We are dedicated to providing a rigorous visual art education for all of our students. Visual art is taught explicitly through a curriculum that is crafted through standards, research, and best practices. Students will explore, experiment, and experience a wide variety of materials and processes that will fine tune their critical thinking, creativity, communication and collaboration skills. The curriculum puts a focus on local and contemporary artists and art movements. Students at all grade levels will be exposed to unique mediums such as digital art, painting, drawing, sculpting, photography, and assemblage. Visual art learning opportunities happen with the teacher, guest speakers, and field trips. Students will gain perspective while studying and responding to works of art that will challenge their thinking and result in growth that will help them in and out of art class.

Outdoor Ed

Outdoor Education is an essential part of the New LA Experience. From 6th to 8th grade, students embark on immersive outdoor trips designed to enrich their learning experience beyond the classroom. These trips are carefully crafted to foster teamwork, leadership skills, environmental stewardship, and a deeper appreciation for the natural world. Our outdoor education curriculum integrates hands-on learning opportunities, empowering students to connect with nature, explore new environments, and challenge themselves in unique settings. Through these unforgettable experiences, students develop resilience, confidence, and a lifelong love for outdoor exploration.

After School Program

Our activities for our middle school students are structured to support their transition to high school. Our comprehensive after school program is offered M-F from the last bell to 6pm on campus. Daily schedule includes enrichment activities, homework help, healthy snacks, and outdoor play. Students choose an elective for 6 weeks, culminating in a showcase to demonstrate new skills and knowledge. All electives fit within our 5 Pillars of MS Excellence: Literacy, Leadership & Life, Visual & Performing Arts, Health & Fitness, and STEM.

New LA Middle School has helped my son become very honest and social. He loves helping out at school. The staff gives great advice to my kids and helps them express themselves. My older daughter, who is now in 10th grade, still misses New LA, and my son doesn’t want to leave!”
