Curriculum

Humanities

Humanities at New LA introduces students to the concept of community and creates a shared understanding of what it means to be human. We will analyze historical moments, class novels and the development of cultures. We believe academic development comes from a focus on habits of mind and problem based collaborative learning, not merely on test taking and memorization alone. By the end of 8th grade students will be able to use their reading, writing, research and analysis skills to identify problems in the world around them and think critically about solutions. They will have a strong sense of identity, teamwork and collaboration to become active agents of change in their communities. Students will make connections between the individual, community, and the world around them to explore the ways in which they can leave their mark on the world.

Science

Science at New LA fosters curiosity and encourages students to think like scientists and engineers. Students collect evidence from books, articles, hands-on experiments and digital simulations to test assumptions and investigate the world around them. We believe academic development comes from a focus on habits of mind and problem-based collaborative learning, not only on test taking and memorization. By the end of 8th grade, students will be able to read, write, think, and argue to demonstrate a deeper understanding of scientific concepts in order to tackle real world problems with real solutions.

Math

Math at New LA asks students to think conceptually about the world around them. Math is a process, where students are taught to and expected to collaborate, investigate, and problem solve every day. Lessons are team-based and use a balance of technology and hands-on instruction in order for students to demonstrate mastery of concepts. We believe academic development comes from a focus on habits of mind and problem based collaborative learning, not merely on test taking and memorization alone. Our math classroom fosters a growth mindset and values perseverance. Over their three year journey, students build upon their foundational math skills, learn to justify their thinking, and construct arguments in order to connect mathematics to everyday life experiences.

Technology

New LA is a 1-to-1 environment using Chromebooks. Every classroom has a Chromebook for every student. Each student has a New LA email account as well as a file creation and storage system that can be accessed anywhere there’s Internet – home, school, library, mobile devices, etc.

How Chromebooks work for New LA
New LA teachers are not the holders of knowledge, providing students with the information they need to know. Rather, teachers are coaches, guiding students to find knowledge, think critically, and solve problems. Chromebooks are tools to facilitate that process. Using programs like iReady, IXL and Google Classroom, teachers push students to work on skills and problems while helping them navigate the vast world of information online.

Teachers integrate rich content into lessons, and encourage students to create and share their own content with classmates. Our information technology goals include Internet proficiency, use of programs such as word processing, spreadsheets, and presentations, learning code, and learning about online safety and digital citizenship.

Student-Led Conferences

Our goal is for the values of Passion for Learning, Engagement in the Community, and Respect for Self and Others, to become ingrained habits of mind and heart for all our students. Embracing and internalizing our school’s mission is pivotal in guiding our students towards becoming exemplary role models. Students participate in two Student-Led Conferences per year for each student.

During a student-led meeting, they reflect on their progress by sharing examples from their work. They discuss their strengths and areas for growth, and set goals for the upcoming trimester. While the advisor facilitates the meeting, the student takes the lead in guiding the discussion.

These conferences differ from traditional parent/teacher meetings; however, should any parent feel the need to meet with a specific teacher regarding their child’s progress at any point during the school year, teachers and administrators are readily available for discussion.

8th Grade Culminating Exhibition

Students at New LA keep a portfolio of work from grades 6-8. Students collaborate with advisors and parents to review work from their portfolio and set goals during bi-annual student led conferences. At the end of 8th grade, students use the portfolio to prepare for their Culminating Exhibition. Students present their portfolios to demonstrate how they embodied the mission of our New LA, and why they are ready to move on to high school.

My daughter has thrived academically. It’s been wonderful that she’s been able to stay with the same group of friends since kindergarten. When she was having some trouble, the school staff immediately informed me and helped us navigate. New LA has prepared her both academically and socially for high school.”
