Preparing for High School

At New LA we believe students should choose a high school that will help them continue their academic and social emotional growth. We believe it is our duty to support students and their families with sorting through the many high school options provided to them so that every student has a high school placement by the end of their 8th grade year.

Aug-Sept: Preparation

In Advisory each 8th grader creates a slide deck research presentation where they document their learning about different types of schools and programs available to them (i.e. charter, private, public, magnets, and Schools for Advanced Studies), note their interests and hobbies, and begin to consider potential careers.

Sept: High School Night & Fair

Our 8th grade Back to School Night kicks off our support of caregivers with the high school application process. Caregivers have a workshop to help them set up their LAUSD e-Choices account so they’re ready to apply to programs like magnet, Schools for Advanced Studies, or affiliated charter schools.

We then have our annual high school fair featuring about 20 high schools and programs (local and from around the state) to our annual high school fair. Caregivers and students meet and greet representatives from the schools and learn more about their offerings. We also have an alumni panel featuring past New LA graduates who are currently in 9-12th grade. Those students provide insights to their high school experience in an effort to help current 8th graders and their families know what to expect.

Oct 1: E-Choices Application Opens

Caregivers apply to specialized LAUSD programs (magnets, Schools for Advanced Studies, affiliated charters) based on their child’s interests and performance abilities.

E-Choices

Oct-Nov: High School Counseling Meeting

Students and their caregivers attend a 30 minute meeting with the principal or school counselor where the student presents their findings and caregivers are given support applying to schools and programs using LAUSD e-choices or using an individual school site’s application system.

Spring Semester

Students and caregivers receive acceptance notices.
